Pune: Tension gripped Yavat in Pune’s Daund taluka on Friday after violent clashes broke out between two groups over an objectionable post on social media. The situation escalated into stone-pelting, lathicharge, and arson, with two vehicles set on fire by the mob. Police resorted to firing tear gas shells to restore order and disperse the crowd. The controversy began after a youth uploaded an objectionable post on social media, which angered a particular group.
A bandh was called in Yavat and Daund taluka, and BJP leaders’ speeches further fueled the tensions. The mob vandalized religious places and properties of the other community, pelting stones and setting a motorcycle on fire. Police have taken swift action, arresting the accused who posted the objectionable content and deploying a large number of personnel to maintain law and order.
Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural) Sandeep Singh Gill has appealed to the people to maintain peace and warned of action against rumor-mongers.
