Pune: The Pune administration is taking a proactive step to manage the large number of tourists visiting popular spots in the region. A new slot-booking system is being introduced at 25 key locations to prevent overcrowding, reduce ecological damage, and ensure public safety. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable tourism and protect the environment.
The Forest Department is developing a mobile application that will allow tourists to book time slots in advance. The system will include controlled entry points, real-time monitoring, and temporary access pauses if the number of visitors exceeds safe limits. This will help to prevent accidents and ensure that the natural beauty of the area is preserved.
The decision to introduce this system follows a tragic incident in which a bridge collapsed under the weight of a large crowd, resulting in loss of life. An inquiry committee has recommended the use of digital tracking and visitor limits to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The new system is expected to benefit local communities by ensuring a steady and manageable flow of tourists. The Forest Department and Gram Panchayats will work together to implement the system, which will be rolled out in a phased manner. A budget of ₹50 crore has been allocated for the digital rollout and supporting infrastructure. Entry to sensitive areas will be restricted until the system is fully operational, and those who attempt to bypass the system will face legal consequences.
By introducing this innovative approach, Pune is setting an example for other districts in Maharashtra to follow. The city’s commitment to public safety, environmental preservation, and local economic stability is evident in its efforts to manage tourism in a sustainable and responsible way.
