Mumbai: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad on August 13, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph. This alert is expected to impact the daily activities of residents in these areas, and necessary precautions should be taken to ensure safety.
Monsoon Lull in Mumbai and Neighboring Districts
Mumbai and its neighboring districts are currently experiencing a lull in monsoon activity, with decreased rainfall this month compared to the first two months. Although the region will continue to witness light to moderate rains at isolated places this week, the overall rainfall activity is expected to remain subdued. According to the IMD, below-normal to normal rainfall is forecasted for August, with a revival expected in September.
Water Levels in Lakes Remain a Concern
The water levels at lakes supplying water to Mumbai remain a concern, with the total useful water content in the seven lakes at 89.02% as of August 10. The total capacity of the seven lakes is 14.47 lakh million liters, and the current stock is 12.88 lakh million liters. The water levels have not been able to cross the 90% mark for the past two weeks, and efforts are being made to conserve water and ensure efficient use.

The local weather forecast for the next 48 hours indicates generally cloudy skies with a possibility of light to moderate rain and thundershowers. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 31°C and 25°C, respectively. As of August 9, Mumbai has received 49% of its average annual rainfall, with the Colaba observatory recording 996 mm and Santacruz observatory recording 1363 mm. This is significantly less than the rainfall recorded on the same day last year, and the city’s rainfall status is being closely monitored by the authorities.
