New Delhi : In a significant development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced 50-year-old Rekha Gupta as the Chief Minister of Delhi. Gupta, who was elected from the Shalimar Bagh constituency, secured the support of all 48 BJP MLAs, paving the way for her to take the reins.
A Veteran Politician
Rekha Gupta has been an active RSS worker since childhood. Her school life was also devoted to the propagation of the RSS. She started her career in local politics by being elected as a councillor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in 2007. BJP’s Return to Power in Delhi
The BJP’s return to power in Delhi marks a significant milestone, as the party comes back to power in the national capital after 27 years. In 1993, Madan Lal Khurana took charge as the BJP’s Chief Minister; later, veteran BJP leader Sushma Swaraj held the post as the first woman chief minister for a few months, but in 1998, the Congress took over, and a Congress party ruled Delhi for a long time.
A New Chapter for Delhi
Gupta’s appointment as Chief Minister is seen as a strategic move to woo OBC voters and women in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections. Her swearing-in ceremony, scheduled for February 20, will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers, senior BJP leaders, slum dwellers, auto and taxi drivers, and common Delhiites.
Reactions from Other Parties
Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal congratulated Gupta on X, assuring her of his support. Former Chief Minister Atishi also expressed happiness over Gupta’s election and wished her good luck.
What’s Next for Delhi?
As Rekha Gupta takes the reins as Chief Minister, Delhiites can expect a new era of governance. With her experience and background, Gupta is well-equipped to tackle the challenges facing the national capital. The city’s residents will be watching closely as she sets out to deliver on her promises.
