⭕ Demand for Scheduled Tribe Status Gains Momentum Across Maharashtra

By | Kuwarchand Mandle

Nanded: The Banjara community has taken to the streets in massive numbers, demanding that they be officially recognized under the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. Citing historical references from the Hyderabad Gazette, the community claims it has long been identified as part of the tribal population and is now pressing the Maharashtra government for immediate acceptance of their demand.

⭕ Historic Basis of the Demand

The issue gained traction after the state government recently issued a Government Resolution (GR) regarding Maratha reservation, drawing from the Hyderabad Gazette. Community leaders point out that the same Gazette also lists Banjaras as a tribal community, strengthening their claim for ST status.

⭕ Kinwat Becomes Epicenter of the Protest

In Nanded district’s Kinwat town, a gigantic rally was organized by the Banjara community. Reports suggest that lakhs of participants, including men, women, and students, poured into the streets, turning the town into a sea of protestors. With traditional banners and loud slogans, the community showcased its unity and determination.

⭕ Warning to the Government

The protestors have issued a stern warning to the state government: accept the demand immediately or face statewide consequences. Leaders declared that if their voices are ignored, the Banjara community will intensify the agitation by organizing a Mumbai blockade, which could severely impact normal life in the state’s financial capital.

⭕ Growing Pressure on the State

The large-scale participation and the historical legitimacy claimed through the Hyderabad Gazette have put significant pressure on the government. Analysts suggest that the state is now in a politically sensitive position, balancing multiple reservation demands from different communities.

The Banjara agitation, if not addressed, has the potential to escalate into a larger state-wide movement, adding to the ongoing debates on caste-based reservations and social justice in Maharashtra.
