Cyclone Ditwah Intensifies: South India on High Alert
Mumbai : A rapidly strengthening Cyclone Ditwah, developing over the warm waters of the southwest Bay of Bengal, has triggered a wave of alerts across southern India as it moves steadily toward the coastline. The storm system, which matured into a severe cyclonic structure within a short span, is now expected to influence weather conditions in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and southern Andhra Pradesh over the next 48–72 hours.
Widespread Rainfall, Strong Winds Forecast for Coastal Districts
Meteorological agencies monitoring the storm’s trajectory suggest that Ditwah could bring extremely heavy rainfall, intense cloud bands and strong winds, especially along districts facing the open sea. Coastal regions of Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Tiruvallur, Nellore and Chittoor are on alert for rainfall exceeding typical monsoon levels, accompanied by wind speeds strong enough to disrupt transport, uproot weak trees and cause localised damage to infrastructure.

Authorities have noted a sharp rise in sea turbulence as the cyclone deepens. High waves, strong offshore currents and reduced visibility have prompted a complete ban on fishing activities in the Bay of Bengal. Coastal communities dependent on daily marine activity have been advised to secure boats, shift equipment to safer locations and avoid the shoreline until conditions stabilise. Port authorities have also initiated precautionary protocols.
States Activate Disaster Response Units
Governments in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh have initiated round-the-clock disaster control rooms, with local administrations instructed to keep shelters, pumps, relief stocks and emergency teams ready. Officials are conducting field assessments in flood-prone neighbourhoods, desilting drains and preparing evacuation plans in case of sudden waterlogging or storm surge.
Concerns Rise After Sri Lanka’s Severe Impact
The cyclone has already demonstrated destructive strength earlier in its path, raising concerns about its potential impact upon nearing India. Widespread flooding, heavy runoff and continuous rain bands have created an urgent need for vigilance across vulnerable districts, with residents encouraged to monitor official communications closely.
Travel Disruption and Public Advisory Issued
Air, rail and road transport bodies have been advised to prepare for delays or route changes. Citizens have been urged to stay indoors during peak impact hours, avoid unnecessary travel, power up essential devices, store drinking water, and maintain emergency kits. Heavy vehicle movement is expected to be restricted in certain areas depending on storm intensity.
