Former defence ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu of China have been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve by a military court over serious corruption charges.
The verdict comes after detailed investigations found both leaders guilty of misusing their positions, accepting huge bribes, and violating military discipline at the highest level. The action is being seen as one of the strongest punishments against senior military officials in recent years.
Under Chinese law, a death sentence with a two-year reprieve does not usually result in immediate execution. Instead, if the accused maintains good conduct during the two-year period, the punishment is typically reduced to life imprisonment without parole.
Along with the sentence, both leaders have been stripped of all political rights for life, and their assets have been seized by the state.
Wei Fenghe served as China’s defence minister from 2018 to 2023 and was considered a key figure in the country’s missile and strategic forces.
Li Shangfu, who succeeded him, held the position briefly in 2023 before being removed amid corruption allegations. Investigations later revealed his involvement in both offering and receiving bribes, while Wei was primarily found guilty of accepting illegal payments.
This case is part of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ongoing anti-corruption drive, which has increasingly targeted the military establishment.
Over the past few years, several high-ranking officers, defence officials, and procurement authorities have been removed or investigated, indicating a deep internal clean-up within the armed forces.
The campaign aims to strengthen discipline, ensure loyalty, and eliminate corruption in defence-related operations.
The sentencing of two former defence ministers sends a strong signal across China’s military and political system that corruption at any level will face strict consequences.
Such high-profile punishment is rare and highlights the seriousness of the government’s efforts to maintain control and accountability within its defence structure.
With this move, China has delivered a powerful message about zero tolerance towards corruption, even at the highest ranks of the military. The development is expected to have a long-term impact on how the country’s defence leadership operates going forward.
