Mumbai: The Municipal Administration of Mumbai has decided to permanently discontinue the Clean-Up Marshals Scheme due to numerous complaints of bribery. The scheme, which was intended to maintain cleanliness in public spaces, has been marred by allegations of extortion and harassment by the marshals.
A Troubled Scheme
The Clean-Up Marshals Scheme was launched to prevent littering and maintain cleanliness in public areas. However, it has been plagued by complaints of bribery, with many citizens and hospital staff reporting instances of marshals demanding money in exchange for not issuing fines.
Action Taken
In response to the allegations, the Municipal Administration has decided to scrap the scheme altogether. The decision was taken after a review of the scheme’s effectiveness and the numerous complaints received. The administration has also taken action against some institutions that were found to be flouting the rules, imposing fines of up to ₹63 lakhs.
Way Forward
The discontinuation of the Clean-Up Marshals Scheme is a significant step towards addressing the issue of bribery and harassment in public spaces. The Municipal Administration must now focus on finding alternative solutions to maintain cleanliness and prevent littering in the city.
