Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is stepping into the entertainment industry as a facilitator. Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani stated that the BMC’s role is to collaborate with the film industry, not control it. The civic body aims to support Mumbai’s entertainment ecosystem, utilizing its infrastructure to benefit the film and live events sector. By doing so, the BMC is recognizing the significant contribution of the entertainment industry to the city’s economy, generating over ₹25,000 crore and employing more than 5 lakh people.
Easing Filming in Mumbai
The BMC is introducing a one-window system for pre-approved permissions and online booking of locations. Various public spaces, including lakes, urban forests, and hospitals, have been identified and mapped for filming. This streamlined process aims to make Mumbai a more attractive destination for filmmakers, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and ensuring smooth coordination between departments. The BMC is working closely with the Mumbai police, fire department, and local ward offices to ensure that filming activities do not disrupt daily life in the city.
Community Considerations
The BMC prioritizes community well-being, balancing creative needs with resident concerns. Dr. Amit Saini, Additional Municipal Commissioner, emphasized the importance of maintaining a symbiotic relationship between filmmakers and local communities, especially in densely populated neighborhoods. By doing so, the BMC aims to minimize disruptions and ensure that filming activities benefit both the industry and the local community. This approach will help to build trust between the civic body, filmmakers, and residents, leading to more successful and sustainable film productions.
Live Entertainment Expansion
The BMC plans to announce two major venues for live events, offering comprehensive support, including infrastructure and safety services. This move aims to establish Mumbai as a global cultural destination, leveraging the city’s rich cultural heritage and creative talent. The venues will be designed to host a wide range of events, from concerts and festivals to theater productions and corporate events, further boosting the city’s reputation as a hub for live entertainment. By supporting live events, the BMC is expected to contribute to the growth of the entertainment industry, generating revenue and creating employment opportunities for locals.
