Mumbai: Cyclone Shakti has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea, with wind speeds of 100 kmph and gusting. Currently located approximately 420 km west of Dwarka in Gujarat, the cyclone is expected to move west-southwestwards and reach the northwest and adjoining west-central Arabian Sea by Sunday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of rough sea conditions, squally weather, and high wind speeds ranging between 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, along the Gujarat and Maharashtra coasts.
The IMD has issued a heavy rainfall alert for several districts in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. Heavy to very heavy rains are predicted in the interior parts of Maharashtra, particularly in East Vidarbha and parts of Marathwada, with a possibility of flooding in the low-lying areas of North Konkan. The Maharashtra government has issued instructions for preparation, including activating disaster management systems, preparing evacuation plans, and issuing public advisories.
