Tianjin: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was formally received by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, marking his first visit to China in over seven years and since the Galwan Valley clashes of 2020. The annual summit began today and will run for two days, bringing together major global leaders amid heightened geopolitical tensions.

Upon his arrival at Binhai International Airport, PM Modi was given a warm welcome by the Indian community, with chants of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram” filling the air. Later at the hotel, Chinese performers played Indian classical instruments such as the sitar, santoor, and tabla, adding a cultural touch to the reception.

On the sidelines of the summit, Modi held bilateral talks with Xi Jinping, where the two leaders focused on strengthening trade ties, addressing India’s trade deficit, and ensuring long-term peace along the disputed Himalayan border. Modi emphasized that the border region now reflects “peace and stability,” while Xi described India and China as “development partners, not rivals.” The discussions come at a time when the US has imposed new tariffs on both nations, making the SCO Summit a key platform for multipolar dialogue.

Beyond the bilateral talks, Modi joined Xi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and other SCO leaders for the official group photograph—a symbolic “family photo” underlining Eurasian cooperation. Modi also met Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, discussing defense collaboration, border security, and democratic processes.

On Day 2, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet President Putin for a bilateral meeting and deliver a plenary address at the summit, focusing on regional security, trade, and collective economic growth among member states
