Heightened Security Concerns in Dhaka

India has expressed serious concern over the security situation surrounding the Indian High Commission after protest activity in Dhaka intensified over the past 24 hours. Demonstrations were reported near sensitive diplomatic zones, prompting heightened alertness and precautionary measures to safeguard diplomatic personnel and property.

India Summons Bangladesh Envoy

In response to the developments, the Ministry of External Affairs summoned Bangladesh’s envoy in New Delhi to formally convey India’s objections and underline its expectations regarding the protection of diplomatic missions. Indian authorities stressed that ensuring the safety of foreign missions is a fundamental international responsibility.

Protest March and Police Intervention

The protest, organised by a local platform, aimed to march towards the Indian mission area in Dhaka. Demonstrators raised political demands and anti-India slogans, leading to tense moments in parts of the city. Bangladeshi law enforcement intervened swiftly, setting up barricades and deploying additional forces to prevent protesters from approaching the high-security diplomatic enclave.

Temporary Disruptions to Consular Services

Amid the evolving security scenario, some Indian consular and visa-related services in Dhaka were temporarily adjusted as a precautionary measure. Authorities stated that the step was taken purely in the interest of public and staff safety and that normal services would resume once conditions stabilise.

Diplomatic Ties Under Strain

The latest episode has added strain to ties between India and Bangladesh, at a time when regional stability remains a shared priority. India reiterated its commitment to maintaining constructive relations while firmly safeguarding its diplomatic interests abroad.

Call for Responsibility and Stability

Indian officials emphasised that inflammatory rhetoric and protests targeting diplomatic missions are unacceptable and risk escalating tensions. New Delhi urged Bangladeshi authorities to take decisive steps to prevent any recurrence and to ensure a secure environment for all foreign diplomatic establishments in Dhaka.
