India Confirmed as Host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games

By | Gitanjali Thorat | PR Desk

New Delhi: India has officially been confirmed as the host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad selected to stage the historic Centenary Edition. The decision places India back on the global sports map two decades after the country hosted the Delhi 2010 Games. Preparations for 2030 have already begun, highlighting India’s growing international sporting ambitions.

India’s First Steps in the Commonwealth Games

India’s association with the Commonwealth Games began in 1934, when the event was still known as the British Empire Games. Over the years, India has steadily risen to become one of the most competitive and consistent medal-winning nations, participating in nearly all major editions.

India’s Overall Medal Legacy at CWG

India has secured over 550 medals across all editions of the Commonwealth Games, placing the country among the top-performing nations in CWG history. With more than 200 gold medals, India has established dominance in multiple sports, especially in the last three decades.

Historic 2010 Delhi Games: India’s Best Performance

India’s most memorable performance came during the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, where the nation finished second in the medal tally with a record 101 medals, including 38 Gold, 27 Silver and 36 Bronze. This remains India’s highest-ever medal haul.

Strong Performances in 2002 and 2022 Editions

The 2002 Manchester Games and the 2022 Birmingham Games were also significant milestones. Despite the exclusion of shooting in 2022, India still managed a strong finish with 61 medals, reaffirming its position as a top Commonwealth contender.

Sports That Have Dominated India’s Medal Chart

Disciplines such as shooting, wrestling, weightlifting, boxing, badminton, and table tennis have consistently delivered medals for India. These sports have defined India’s reputation at CWG, with shooting contributing the maximum gold medals historically.

Star Athletes Who Shaped India’s CWG Success

Legendary athletes such as Abhinav Bindra, Jaspal Rana, PV Sindhu, Sushil Kumar, Mirabai Chanu, Mary Kom, and Bajrang Punia have been instrumental in building India’s Commonwealth Games success. Their achievements have inspired generations of upcoming sportspersons.

Ahmedabad’s Vision for Hosting the 2030 Games

With Ahmedabad chosen as the host city, India is preparing to build world-class sports facilities, including a modern sports enclave, athletics village, aquatics arena, and multi-purpose indoor venues. The hosting effort aligns with India’s broader goal of bidding for the 2036 Olympic Games.

The Road to 2030: A New Chapter in Indian Sports

As the countdown to the 2030 Commonwealth Games begins, India is poised to celebrate its sporting legacy while shaping a stronger future. The Centenary Games not only honour 100 years of Commonwealth sporting tradition but also open a new era of international sports presence for India.
