Karur, Tamil Nadu : The tragic stampede during Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s rally in Karur has claimed 40 lives, with at least 67 people still undergoing treatment in hospitals. The incident has triggered a heated political battle between the ruling government and Vijay’s party over accountability.
🟡 Vijay’s Statement: “My Heart is Filled with Pain”
Breaking his silence, TVK chief Vijay released a heartfelt video message describing the stampede as “the most painful moment” of his public life. “I have never faced such a painful situation. My heart is filled with pain, only pain,” he said, extending condolences to the families of the deceased and prayers for those injured. He assured that he would personally meet the victims’ families soon.
Vijay strongly defended his party, insisting that “we did nothing wrong” and that all rally arrangements were made in consultation with authorities. Directly addressing Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, he declared: “CM sir, if you are desperate to find fault with us, do it with me. Don’t touch my supporters. I will be here at home or at the office — do whatever you want to do with me.”
The actor-politician also questioned why such a tragedy occurred only in Karur despite TVK holding rallies across five districts. “People know the truth. People are watching everything,” he said, hinting at political motives behind the incident. He further urged his cadres to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement while asserting that his party would stand by those falsely implicated.
🟡 Arrests and Legal Action
Police have arrested multiple TVK functionaries, including Karur town secretary Masi Pavunraj, and secured judicial custody for two leaders until October 14. An FIR names senior party members under serious charges, including culpable homicide. Authorities have also arrested three people, including leaders from BJP and TVK, for spreading rumors related to the tragedy.
🟡 Government’s Stand vs. TVK’s Defence
The Tamil Nadu Government released video evidence alleging that TVK cadres broke security barricades and ignored safety protocols, leading to chaos at the overcrowded venue. Officials also insisted that adequate police deployment and medical response were in place. On the other hand, TVK has filed a petition in the High Court demanding a CBI probe, alleging bias in the state’s investigation.
🟡 Compensation and Relief
The state has announced ₹10 lakh compensation for families of each victim. Traders in Karur district observed a shutdown in solidarity, while opposition parties have demanded a judicial inquiry.
🟡 National Reactions
BJP MP Hema Malini and several opposition voices criticized the government, stating the tragedy could have been averted if a larger venue had been allotted. Meanwhile, the political blame game continues as grieving families demand justice and accountability.
