Satara: The Koyna Dam authorities have initiated measures to control the water level in the dam due to the heavy rainfall in the catchment area. As part of this effort, the six sluice gates of the dam will be opened from 3 feet to 5 feet, resulting in a discharge of 33,000 cusecs of water into the Koyna river. This measure is being taken to ensure the safety of the dam and prevent any potential overflow.
Current Dam Status
The current water level in the Koyna Dam is 2157’00” (657.454 meters), with a gross storage of 96.87 TMC, which is approximately 92.03% of its capacity. The inflow into the dam is currently 45,082 cusecs, and the total discharge is expected to be 35,100 cusecs. The power house at the base of the dam is also operational, discharging 2,100 cusecs of water.
Rainfall Updates
The heavy rainfall in the catchment area has resulted in significant inflows into the dam. The rainfall details are as follows:
Koyna: 35 mm (daily), 3501 mm (cumulative)
Navaja: 57 mm (daily), 4176 mm (cumulative)
Mahabaleshwar: 67 mm (daily), 4116 mm (cumulative)
Warning Issued
The authorities have issued a warning to villagers living along the banks of the Koyna river due to the increased water discharge. The villagers are advised to exercise caution and follow the instructions of the local authorities to ensure their safety.
