UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network celebrates cities that use creativity as a key driver for sustainable development. The “City of Gastronomy” tag means Lucknow’s culinary traditions — from Galouti kebabs to Kesar phirni — are not just delicious but also part of a living heritage that connects culture, economy, and tourism.

To be listed, cities must prove that their food culture is unique, historically rooted, and economically significant. The proposal for Lucknow was prepared by the Uttar Pradesh government, highlighting its centuries-old Awadhi cuisine, traditional cooking methods like dum pukht, and food festivals that attract visitors from across the world.
Lucknow’s food is more than just recipes; it’s a story of culture, refinement, and history. The city’s cuisine flourished under the Nawabs, blending Persian techniques with local ingredients. Every dish, from sunday kebab to sheermal, reflects a legacy of slow cooking, precision, and hospitality.
Lucknow is only the second Indian city after Hyderabad to earn this honor. This recognition will help boost food tourism, local businesses, and cultural pride. It also strengthens India’s image globally as a land of diverse cuisines and creative cities.
The UNESCO tag also pushes the city to protect traditional recipes, support local chefs, and promote sustainable food practices. It’s a reminder that culture isn’t just found in monuments — it lives in our kitchens, markets, and dining tables.
In short, Lucknow’s inclusion in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network is not just about taste — it’s about identity, tradition, and global recognition of India’s culinary genius.
