Satara – The 166-E Karad-Chiplun National Highway is a vital artery connecting two regional divisions. This highway passes through one of the highest rainfall areas in the country. Despite its importance, the project’s progress has been slow since its inception in 2017.

Project Background and Current Status

The project was initially awarded to Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a renowned construction company. However, L&T abandoned the project midway due to complex issues like land acquisition. Currently, a new contractor, “All Grace,” is handling a mere 13 kilometers of the project. The work is progressing at a snail’s pace, with only 4-5 kilometers completed in the past year.

Issues with Contractor’s Work

The contractor has excavated all bridges on the 13-kilometer stretch, raising concerns about the quality of the alternative routes. Locals and travelers have faced immense difficulties due to the contractor’s alleged mismanagement. The lack of attention from National Highway authorities and contractor management to the grievances of locals and travelers has further exacerbated the situation.

Weather-Related Concerns and Risks

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for the Satara district, warning of heavy rainfall in the coming days. The region has already experienced significant rainfall, with the Koyna Nagar area receiving 104 mm of rain in a short span. The first rain has already tested the alternative roads, and the poor condition of these roads has forced the local administration to ban heavy vehicles.

Disaster Risks and Management Challenges

The region is prone to natural disasters like landslides. In 2022, this area experienced a major landslide, resulting in loss of life. The artificial crisis created by the contractor’s work may further worsen the situation. With the prediction of heavy rainfall in the coming days, disaster management authorities are bracing for a tough time. The possibility of temporary roads collapsing and disrupting connectivity to several villages is a major cause of concern.

Urgent Action For Situation

The artificial crisis created by the contractor’s alleged incompetence has raised serious questions about the project’s future and the safety of the people traveling on this critical highway. Urgent action is needed to address these concerns and ensure the project’s timely completion.
