Mumbai: India recorded historic Diwali sales this year, with total business reaching ₹6.05 lakh crore, including ₹5.40 lakh crore in goods and ₹65,000 crore in services, according to a nationwide study by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT).
CAIT’s “Research Report on Diwali Festival Sales 2025” found that festive trade grew 25% compared to last year’s ₹4.25 lakh crore. Traditional and non-corporate markets accounted for 85% of total sales, highlighting the revival of small traders and local markets.
CAIT Secretary General Shri Praveen Khandelwal said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for “Vocal for Local” and “Swadeshi Diwali” deeply resonated with consumers — 87% chose Indian-made goods, sharply reducing demand for Chinese products.
The service sector — including packaging, hospitality, logistics, travel, and event management — contributed ₹65,000 crore, reflecting the festival’s wide economic impact.
CAIT National President B.C. Bhartia reported strong sales in FMCG, jewellery, electronics, garments, and sweets, while GST rationalization and stable prices boosted consumer confidence.
The Trader Confidence Index stood at 8.6/10 and Consumer Confidence Index at 8.4/10, the highest in a decade.
CAIT estimates that this Diwali trade generated 50 lakh temporary jobs, with 28% of sales from rural and semi-urban areas, underscoring India’s growing domestic market and the strength of its Swadeshi economy.
