What Happened

Shishu Sarothi, a Guwahati-based centre for rehabilitation and training for persons with multiple disabilities, has launched a certificate course in hospitality, marking the first such initiative in Northeast India.

About the Programme

The six-month certificate programme has been introduced in collaboration with the Gateway Institute of Hotel Management (GIHM) and is designed to train up to 40 candidates with different forms of impairment. Eligible participants include persons with cerebral palsy, locomotor disabilities, low vision, and blood disorders such as haemophilia, thalassemia, and sickle cell disease.

Eligibility and Scope

The course is open to candidates aged between 18 and 40 years who have passed Class 12. Visually impaired candidates have not been included, as the institute currently lacks Braille-based learning infrastructure. Participants are expected to arrange accommodation within a monthly stipend of ₹5,000.

Most applicants are expected from Guwahati and nearby areas, though candidates from across Assam are eligible.

Industry Collaboration and Certification

The programme is supported by LIC Housing Finance Limited under its Sarthak Project. It includes one month of internship with leading hospitality organisations in Assam. According to GIHM officials, the course is certified by Assam Skill University.

Institutional Background

Founded in 2017, GIHM was recently adjudged the best hotel management institute in Guwahati by Merit Awards and Market Research, Noida, on December 20, 2025.

Shishu Sarothi, established in 1987, currently educates over 100 students with developmental disabilities through trained special educators, parents, and volunteers. The centre serves children and young adults with disabilities from Assam and other regions.
