A Tireless Voice for Workers’ Rights
Mumbai : Prominent social reformer and labour rights activist Baba Adhav passed away in Pune at the age of 95, leaving behind a rich legacy of activism and empowerment. For decades, he dedicated his life to improving the conditions of the unorganised workforce, becoming one of Maharashtra’s most respected voices of social justice.
Founder of the Hamal Panchayat
Adhav’s most remarkable contribution was the creation of the Hamal Panchayat, an organisation that united head-load workers, daily-wage labourers, and rickshaw drivers under a collective platform. Through this movement, he led numerous campaigns demanding fair wages, dignity at work, and legal protection for vulnerable labour groups.
A Doctor Who Chose the Path of Activism
Despite being a highly skilled Ayurvedic practitioner, Baba Adhav chose to sacrifice a stable career for social service. He spent his lifetime among workers who had no collective representation, organising them and amplifying their struggles across Maharashtra.
Leader of Social Equality Movements
He also played a key role in the “One Village, One Water Source” campaign, a movement aimed at ending social discrimination in access to fundamental resources. His activism consistently focused on equality, dignity, and eliminating entrenched injustices in society.
Uncompromising Even in His Later Years
Even in his 90s, Adhav remained bold and active. He famously undertook a hunger strike demanding transparency in the electoral system, highlighting his belief that democratic processes must remain clean and accountable.
A Loss to Maharashtra’s Social Movements
Baba Adhav’s death marks the end of an era in labour rights activism. His contributions continue to inspire workers, reformists, and social leaders who carry forward his mission of justice and equality.
