Mumbai: In a significant move to align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Maharashtra government has announced that Class 1 students of Maharashtra State Board schools will receive new textbooks based on the NCERT curriculum from June 2025. This development is part of the state’s broader initiative to adopt the CBSE model of school education.
New Textbooks to Include Maharashtra-Specific Content
Ranjit Singh Deol, principal secretary of school education and sport department of Maharashtra, confirmed that the new textbooks will be based on the NCERT curriculum but will include Maharashtra-specific content in subjects like Social Sciences. This move aims to provide students with a better understanding of the state’s history, geography, and culture.
Alignment with CBSE Curriculum and Academic Calendar
The Maharashtra government is also considering aligning the academic calendar with that of the CBSE, which begins the academic year in April. Additionally, the state plans to adopt the CBSE curriculum for state board schools, with the steering committee formed for the state curriculum framework approving the plan.
Implementation and Future Plans
Experts from the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) developed the new textbooks, which will be implemented in phases. As NCERT develops curriculum for higher classes, Maharashtra SCERT will follow a year after, ensuring a smooth transition for students.
