Mumbai: The Supreme Court has issued a significant order regarding the long-pending local body elections in Maharashtra. The court has directed the State Election Commission to issue a notification for elections within four weeks and complete the entire election process within four months.
This decision will pave the way for elections to various municipal corporations, district councils, and panchayat samitis in the state. The court emphasized that conducting elections in a timely manner is essential for the smooth functioning of democratic processes and protecting citizens’ fundamental rights.
The court’s order also includes reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in the elections, based on the rules in place before the submission of the Bhanthia Commission’s report in July 2022. However, the elections will be subject to the final outcome of petitions challenging the commission’s report.
The State Election Commission has been given a deadline of four weeks to issue the election notification, followed by a four-month period for the completion of the election process. This development is expected to heat up the political atmosphere in the state, with all political parties gearing up for the elections.
The court’s order has been welcomed by various political parties, and all eyes are now on the State Election Commission to announce the election schedule. The timely conduct of elections is expected to boost development work at the local level and provide citizens with elected representatives to address their issues.
