Satara, Maharashtra – The flood situation in Satara has intensified as continuous heavy rainfall continues to disrupt daily life. While citizens are grappling with inundated roads, disrupted transport, and rising water levels, animals too are bearing the brunt of nature’s fury.
Today, 13 gates of the Koyna Dam were opened to release excess water, discharging nearly 89,000 cusecs into the river basin. The massive outflow worsened flooding in nearby areas, leaving both residents and wildlife stranded.
Amid this crisis, a dramatic rescue unfolded when 11 monkeys were found clinging to a small tree branch for nearly six hours. The tree, surrounded by strong floodwaters on all sides, left the monkeys trapped with no safe passage to escape.
The district administration quickly alerted the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), who dispatched a team to the location. Assessing the dangerous current and precarious position of the tree, NDRF personnel launched a challenging rescue mission.
Despite difficulties caused by the swift water flow, the rescue team managed to bring all 11 monkeys to safety. Eyewitnesses praised the swift response, calling it an inspiring reminder that disaster management efforts extend beyond human survival.
“This operation was not easy. The floodwaters were forceful, but saving every life – human or animal – is our priority,” said an NDRF official involved in the rescue.
The incident highlights the broader impact of flooding in Satara, where homes, farmlands, and now wildlife habitats are severely affected. Authorities have urged citizens to remain alert as water levels are expected to rise further with continued rainfall.
