Ratnagiri: A wave of tension spread in Chiplun after slippers and a purse belonging to a woman were found abandoned on Gandhareshwar bridge. Initial suspicion suggests that the woman may have jumped into the river to end her life.
According to police sources, the missing woman has been identified as Apeksha Amol Chavan from Sangameshwar. On Tuesday evening around 4 pm, she left her home without informing anyone. When she didn’t return, her husband lodged a missing complaint at Sangameshwar police station.
Tracking her mobile location led the family to Gandhareshwar bridge in Chiplun, where they discovered her belongings. This sparked fears that she may have jumped into the river. However, police are also probing another angle—whether she staged this act and left for an unknown destination via the nearby railway station.
Interestingly, Gandhareshwar bridge has witnessed similar tragic incidents in the past. In July this year, a young couple from Dhule jumped into the Vashishti River from the same bridge, leading to a massive search operation by police and NDRF. This recurring pattern has raised further concerns about safety and security around the bridge area.
