Mumbai: The Cockroach Janta Party’s protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar turned tense at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on October 2, with opposing groups confronting the protesters and police stepping in to control the situation.

Thousands of people gathered for the CJP’s agitation despite Mumbai Police denying permission for the proposed protest at Shivaji Park. The authorities had cited restrictions governing the use of the ground, the absence of necessary civic permissions and concerns over traffic and public order.

🟡 Slogans Trigger Tension at Protest Site

The atmosphere became tense when a group of people opposing the CJP protest reached the area and raised slogans, including “Jai Shri Ram”. Videos from the spot showed heated exchanges between the two sides, following which police personnel intervened and moved the opposing group away from the immediate protest area.

The incident created a brief confrontation at the venue, although the larger CJP gathering continued. Reports from the spot also indicated police action during moments of heightened tension.

The group opposing the CJP agitation has been identified in reports as Gen Next Mumbai. While there has been discussion about the presence of right-wing activists, there is no confirmed evidence establishing that RSS or Bajrang Dal officially organised the confrontation.

🟡 CJP Leaders Stand Firm on Gyanesh Kumar

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke continued his demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The organisation has raised allegations concerning the revision of electoral rolls and the functioning of the Election Commission.

CJP leaders have said that the movement is aimed at raising questions about electoral transparency and protecting what they describe as the rights of voters.

During his address, Dipke also criticised the central government and several senior political leaders. He said the CJP would not withdraw its agitation and indicated that the Mumbai protest was only one stage of a larger campaign.

🟡 Complaint Against CJP Leaders Over Protest

The controversy has also reached the police station.

A complaint has been lodged at Shivaji Park Police Station against CJP leaders including Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das and Ratna Singh in connection with the gathering.

The complaint alleges that the leaders organised and mobilised a large gathering despite permission for the proposed protest having been denied.

The allegations will have to be examined by the police and the competent authorities. The filing of a complaint does not by itself establish the guilt of the persons named in it.

🟡 Dipke Announces ‘Jantar Mantar 2.0’

Following the Mumbai protest, Abhijeet Dipke announced the next phase of the CJP campaign.

Dipke said that if Gyanesh Kumar does not resign, CJP supporters from across the country will march towards Delhi and hold a major protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10.

He described the proposed demonstration as a peaceful agitation and gave a “Chalo Delhi” call to supporters. He also referred to the proposed protest as “Jantar Mantar 2.0” and said that the movement would continue through peaceful means.

The announcement means that the CJP’s campaign, which intensified with the Shivaji Park demonstration, is now set to move towards the national capital.

🟡 Political Opposition and Local Concerns

The CJP protest has faced criticism not only from opposing political groups but also from residents around Shivaji Park. Local residents have raised concerns about crowds, traffic movement, noise and the impact of large demonstrations on the surrounding residential area.

At the same time, CJP supporters have maintained that peaceful protest is a democratic right and that the organisation is entitled to raise questions about the functioning of constitutional institutions.

The confrontation at Shivaji Park has therefore brought several issues into focus—from the CJP’s allegations concerning the electoral process to the administration of public protest venues and the right of opposing groups to demonstrate.

🟡 Focus Now Shifts to Delhi

With a police complaint pending against CJP leaders and a fresh protest announced for October 10 at Jantar Mantar, the Shivaji Park episode is likely to be followed by another major mobilisation in Delhi.

The immediate question now is whether Gyanesh Kumar will remain in office and how the authorities will respond to the CJP’s proposed October 10 demonstration.

For the CJP, however, the message from Mumbai is clear—the campaign demanding accountability from the Election Commission is set to continue beyond Shivaji Park.
