This year’s Chhath Puja not only illuminated ghats across India with devotion but also set a new benchmark for economic vibrancy. According to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), the festival generated an estimated ₹50,000 crore in trade nationwide, showcasing how spiritual celebration and economic growth can go hand in hand.
CAIT Vice President and Thane Zila Wholesale Vyapari Welfare Mahasangh President Shri Sureshbhai Thakkar noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to buy Swadeshi goods, supported by recent GST reductions, created a dynamic environment for local markets.
> “This Chhath Puja beautifully united faith with India’s Swadeshi spirit — energizing the Sanatan economy while strengthening cultural roots,” Thakkar said.
Festival Fuels Massive Trade Across States
CAIT’s assessment found that over 10 crore devotees participated in Chhath Puja celebrations across India.
Bihar: ₹15,000 crore trade
Delhi: ₹8,000 crore trade
Jharkhand: ₹5,000 crore trade
The festival saw unprecedented spending on ritual goods, traditional sweets, and decorative materials. States like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana also reported significant increases in local sales due to large migrant populations.
CAIT Secretary General and MP from Chandni Chowk Shri Praveen Khandelwal said that the Purvanchal region, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Eastern Uttar Pradesh remained the heart of celebrations, while metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai emerged as major economic hubs.
> “Chhath Puja’s economic footprint is now national — expanding from ghats to metros, from tradition to trade,” Khandelwal remarked.
Swadeshi Spirit Drives Local Business
In line with the “Swadeshi Chhath” campaign, local artisans, basket weavers, and jaggery producers recorded strong sales. Small vendors and rural craftsmen benefited immensely from the heightened demand for indigenous products.
Key items driving sales included bananas, sugarcane, coconuts, rice, earthen lamps, diyas, bamboo baskets, flowers, sweets like thekua and laddoos, and essential puja materials. The festival also boosted employment for boatmen, sanitation workers, transporters, and security personnel.
Public Spending and Infrastructure Boost
Government expenditure on ghat construction, lighting, safety, and sanitation ran into thousands of crores, supporting local economies and civic workers. The combined impact of GST savings, festive demand, and Swadeshi sentiment created one of the most prosperous festive seasons in recent years.
> “Chhath Puja has become a national celebration of both devotion and development,” said CAIT’s Shri Uday Sureshbhai Thakkar.
