Jaipur – A major fire incident was reported on April 20, 2026, at the HPCL Rajasthan Refinery located in Pachpadra area of Balotra district. The refinery, operated by HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited (HRRL), is one of India’s most significant oil infrastructure projects. The incident gained national attention as it occurred just a day before the scheduled inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from the site, creating panic among workers and nearby areas. Emergency protocols were immediately activated within the refinery premises.

According to initial reports, the fire is believed to have started near the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU), which is considered the core processing section of the refinery. Experts suspect that a hydrocarbon leak from a valve or flange in the heat exchanger system could have triggered the blaze. The CDU plays a crucial role in separating crude oil into usable fractions, making it a sensitive and high-risk area. The exact cause, however, is yet to be officially confirmed by authorities. Technical teams are continuing their assessment to determine the root cause.

Firefighting teams, along with the refinery’s in-house emergency response units, worked continuously for several hours to control the situation. The fire was eventually brought under control, preventing it from spreading to other critical units within the refinery complex. HPCL officials confirmed that the damage was limited to a specific section and that major units remain structurally safe. Importantly, no casualties or injuries have been reported in the incident so far. This has been seen as a relief given the scale and sensitivity of the facility.

In light of the incident, the inauguration event scheduled for April 21, 2026, has been postponed as a precautionary measure. The refinery project, valued at over ₹79,000 crore, is considered a key development for strengthening India’s energy security and petrochemical capacity. Any disruption to such a large-scale project raises concerns about operational readiness and safety compliance. Authorities have indicated that the new inauguration date will be announced after a full safety review. The delay may also impact associated economic and logistical plans.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has ordered a high-level investigation into the fire incident to identify the exact cause and any potential lapses. A team comprising internal experts and external safety agencies will examine all technical and operational aspects of the refinery. The probe will focus on identifying accountability, reviewing safety systems, and recommending preventive measures for the future. The incident has once again brought attention to industrial safety standards in large infrastructure projects. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses and official reports are released.
