India is witnessing major weather fluctuations at the beginning of May as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning activity, and heatwave conditions across multiple states. From North India to the southern peninsula and from the Northeast to western regions, changing weather patterns have prompted authorities to remain on alert amid concerns over public safety, agriculture, and rising temperatures.
According to the latest IMD forecast, parts of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh are likely to witness light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next few days. A western disturbance has become active over North India, leading to sudden weather changes and strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 60 kmph in some areas. While temperatures in Delhi may touch around 38 degrees Celsius, cloudy conditions are expected to provide temporary relief from the intense heat.
In Northeast India, states including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Mizoram are expected to receive heavy rainfall over the coming days. Authorities have warned of possible waterlogging and flood-like situations in low-lying areas. Rain activity is also expected to continue across Bihar, West Bengal, and Sikkim as moisture-laden winds remain active in the region.
Southern states such as Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh are also witnessing increasing pre-monsoon activity. Hyderabad has been placed under a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning, while Bengaluru is expected to receive scattered showers during the weekend. Weather officials have advised residents to remain cautious during evening hours due to the possibility of sudden lightning strikes and strong winds.
Meanwhile, heatwave conditions continue to intensify across Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of Maharashtra. Western Rajasthan is likely to experience severe heatwave conditions between May 9 and May 11. Coastal regions including Konkan, Goa, and parts of Gujarat are expected to face hot and humid weather conditions, increasing discomfort levels for residents. Mumbai and nearby districts including Thane, Palghar, and Raigad are likely to witness rising humidity levels along with isolated evening showers in some locations.
Several districts in Maharashtra’s Marathwada and western regions may also witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. Farmers have been advised to take precautions to protect standing crops and orchards due to the risk of storm-related damage. Hailstorm incidents have also been reported from parts of Gujarat amid unstable atmospheric conditions.
The IMD’s monthly outlook suggests that India could receive above-normal rainfall during May 2026, although several regions are simultaneously expected to experience frequent heatwave episodes. Experts believe these erratic weather patterns are linked to climate change, rapid urbanisation, and environmental imbalance. Multiple state governments have already begun implementing Heatwave Action Plans while urging citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours.
