May 7, 2026 (Thursday): Hung Verdict Triggers Political Uncertainty

Tamil Nadu entered a phase of uncertainty on May 7, 2026, after election results showed Vijay leading with around 108 seats, emerging as the single largest party but falling short of the majority mark. The fractured mandate led to intense political activity, with major parties exploring alliances and strategies to stake claim to power.

May 8, 2026 (Friday): Majority Crossed but Delay Sparks Controversy

By May 8, 2026, the situation shifted significantly as Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) secured support from Congress, Left parties, and smaller allies, pushing its tally beyond the required majority. Despite this, the Governor of Tamil Nadu did not immediately invite him to form the government, leading to allegations of delay and political pressure. Meanwhile, reports of MLAs being moved to resorts, backdoor negotiations, and possible alliance attempts by rival parties intensified the political drama. Vijay also issued a strong warning of mass resignations if the mandate was ignored.

May 9, 2026 (Saturday): Supreme Court Intervenes

Amid the escalating crisis, the matter reached the Supreme Court of India on May 9, 2026. During an urgent hearing, the apex court questioned the Governor’s delay and observed that constitutional authorities must act promptly when a clear majority is established. The court emphasized that democratic mandate cannot be stalled and that a floor test remains the ultimate method to determine majority.

Court Direction: Call Vijay to Form Government

Following its observations, the Supreme Court effectively directed the Governor to invite Vijay to form the government and ensure a time-bound floor test. The court clarified that the Governor’s role is not discretionary in such situations and must align with constitutional principles, making this a crucial intervention in the ongoing crisis.

What Happens Next: Swearing-in and Floor Test

With the court’s intervention on May 9, 2026, the path is now clear for Vijay to take oath as Chief Minister. The next key step will be the Assembly floor test, expected within a few days, which will formally confirm the majority and establish the new government in Tamil Nadu.
