Congress seeks a larger share of Uttar Pradesh’s 403 Assembly seats, while Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party focuses on candidate strength and alliance coordination.

Lucknow : The political contest for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections is beginning to take shape, with the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) facing a crucial test over seat-sharing within the INDIA bloc. Congress has reportedly sought 175–200 seats, while the SP is emphasising the importance of selecting candidates with strong electoral prospects. A final, constituency-wise agreement has not been officially announced.

The Congress is seeking a larger role in Uttar Pradesh after its improved performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The party believes its electoral gains provide a basis for negotiating a greater share of Assembly constituencies. However, the final arrangement will depend on discussions between the two parties and their assessment of local political conditions.

🟡 Akhilesh Yadav’s Stand on the INDIA Bloc

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has stressed the importance of strengthening the INDIA bloc and maintaining coordination among opposition parties. The SP’s position is that seat allocation should take into account the strength of candidates and their prospects in individual constituencies.

Congress leaders, meanwhile, are seeking sufficient representation to expand the party’s organisational presence across the state. The two sides will have to reconcile their respective demands while considering local leadership, previous election results and constituency-level political equations.

Reports about the progress of negotiations have varied. Although statements have indicated movement towards a seat-sharing formula, the detailed allocation remains unconfirmed publicly. The Congress’s reported demand should therefore be treated as an initial negotiating position rather than a final agreement.

🟡 Why Congress Wants a Bigger Share

The 2024 Lok Sabha election results have become an important reference point in the negotiations. In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party won 37 parliamentary seats, the Congress secured six and the BJP won 33 of the state’s 80 seats.

The Congress is seeking to build on this performance and strengthen its position in the state. The SP, which has a larger Assembly presence, is also keen to protect its organisational strength and select candidates capable of competing effectively in their constituencies.

The challenge for both parties will be to determine which seats each can contest while avoiding unnecessary competition between alliance partners. A seat-sharing arrangement will need to address not only the total number of constituencies but also the selection of individual candidates.

🟡 UP Assembly Election History: What the Results Show

Uttar Pradesh has 403 Assembly seats and plays a significant role in national politics. The results of the last three Assembly elections provide important background to the current negotiations.

2012: The Samajwadi Party won 224 seats and formed the government under Akhilesh Yadav. The Bahujan Samaj Party secured 80 seats, the BJP won 47 and the Congress won 28.

2017: The BJP secured 312 seats, while the SP won 47 and the Congress seven. The SP and Congress had contested together, but the alliance failed to secure a majority.

2022: The BJP won 255 seats and returned to power, while the SP increased its tally to 111. The Congress secured just two seats.

🟡 Can SP and Congress Agree on 403 Seats?

These results illustrate how the political balance in Uttar Pradesh has changed over successive elections. The 2017 alliance experience also remains relevant as the SP and Congress consider how to coordinate their efforts in 2027.

The coming months will be important for the SP and Congress as they work towards an arrangement acceptable to both parties. Constituency-level strength, local leadership, previous electoral performance and the distribution of political influence are likely to remain central to the negotiations.

For now, the reported demand for 175–200 seats reflects the Congress’s negotiating position, not a confirmed allocation. The SP’s emphasis on candidate winnability suggests that the final arrangement may depend on detailed discussions rather than a simple division based on the number of seats sought.

As the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approach, the key question is whether the two parties can settle their differences and establish a coordinated electoral strategy across all 403 constituencies.
