Ratnagiri SP’s record of crime control, AI-led policing, citizen services and road-safety initiatives puts his name in focus

Ratnagiri: The spotlight now shifts to the next stage of the Fame India–Asia Post list of India’s 100 Best Police Chiefs. After selecting 100 police officers from across the country, the next question is: Who will make it to the Top 25—and who could eventually emerge as the No. 1 Police Chief?
Among the Maharashtra officers featured in the national list is Ratnagiri Superintendent of Police Nitin Dattatray Bagate. His inclusion has now brought his work in Ratnagiri into focus, particularly his combination of crime control, technology-driven investigation, citizen-oriented policing and preventive safety measures.
🟡 First, the race for the Top 25
The Fame India–Asia Post selection is not limited to crime statistics alone. The published assessment framework refers to broader aspects of policing, including law and order, crime control, leadership, public trust and overall policing performance.
That makes the next stage particularly interesting. The 100 officers will effectively be assessed not only on what crimes they solved, but also on how they led their forces, introduced new policing methods, responded to emerging challenges and improved public safety.
Only after the Top 25 are identified will the larger question arise: Who deserves the No. 1 position?
And this is where Nitin Bagate’s record in Ratnagiri becomes significant.
🟡 Crime control with measurable results
Bagate took charge as Ratnagiri Superintendent of Police in May 2025. During the subsequent period, Ratnagiri Police reported improvements across several crime-related indicators.
According to the 2025 annual review, fraud cases declined by 33%, while detection rates in serious offences also improved. The detection rate for robbery, dacoity, house-breaking and chain-snatching cases reportedly increased by more than 21% compared with the previous year.
These figures provide a measurable basis for evaluating Bagate under the crime-control and investigation parameters.
🟡 AI enters the crime investigation room
Perhaps the most distinctive feature of Bagate’s policing model is his emphasis on technology.
Under his leadership, Ratnagiri Police developed RAIDS, an artificial-intelligence-based system aimed at helping investigators identify unidentified or disfigured bodies and trace missing persons and wanted offenders.
Reports published in 2026 said the system had helped police identify 30 unidentified bodies, while also supporting efforts to trace absconding accused and missing persons.
This combination of technology, investigation and police intelligence gives Bagate a distinctive element in the national comparison.
🟡 Citizen-focused policing
Technology has not been restricted to investigation.
Ratnagiri Police have also introduced digital services aimed at different sections of society, including senior citizens, women and fishermen.
The wider use of digital tools for public-facing police services fits directly into the citizen-oriented policing aspect of the national evaluation.
🟡 Road safety gets priority
Another important dimension of Bagate’s work is road safety and passenger protection.
A recent fatal crash on the Mumbai–Goa Highway near Lanja, in which a car collided with a stationary dumper and four people died, once again highlighted the dangers posed by heavy vehicles parked or stopped on highways. The accident was widely reported in July 2026.
Against this backdrop, Ratnagiri Police have undertaken an initiative to improve the visibility of heavy vehicles by ensuring that dumpers and other heavy vehicles are fitted with reflective radium strips.
The police administration is also reaching out directly to dumper owners across the district as part of the campaign to make heavy vehicles more visible, particularly at night.
The significance of the initiative lies in its preventive approach. Instead of limiting policing to action after an accident, the objective is to reduce the possibility of future collisions by making heavy vehicles easier for approaching motorists to see.
If implemented across the district, the initiative adds another dimension to Bagate’s policing record: protecting citizens not only from crime but also from preventable road hazards.
🟡 Action against drugs and illegal activities
Ratnagiri Police have also maintained a strong enforcement focus against drugs and illegal activities.
The 2025 annual review reported 865 cases under prohibition laws and action against 140 gambling dens. More than 181 kg of narcotic substances were reportedly destroyed under the Mission Clean initiative.
Such operations strengthen the enforcement and crime-prevention component of Bagate’s record.
Innovation for Ratnagiri’s unique geography
Ratnagiri’s coastline, creeks, mangroves and difficult terrain require policing methods beyond conventional road patrols.
The ‘Swamp Police’ initiative, using kayaks to patrol creeks, mangrove areas and marshy terrain, is an example of adapting policing to local geographical challenges.
Such initiatives bring together preventive policing, coastal security and innovation—three areas that can become important when police leadership is assessed on a broader national scale.
🟡 So, can Bagate make the Top 25?
The final Top 25 have not been announced, and the organisers have not publicly released an individual scorecard showing exactly how many marks each officer received under each criterion.
Therefore, it would be premature to claim that Nitin Bagate will definitely finish first.
But there is a clear basis for asking whether he could become a serious contender.

On those parameters, Nitin Bagate’s work in Ratnagiri gives him several points worth watching.
His use of artificial intelligence in investigation, measurable crime-control results, digital citizen services, action against narcotics, innovative coastal policing and the newly emphasised road-safety approach together present a distinctive policing model.
🟡 Maharashtra’s wait—and Ratnagiri’s bigger question
With four Maharashtra officers appearing in the national list, the state now awaits the next stage of the selection.
For Ratnagiri, however, the question is more specific:
Can Nitin Bagate’s work take him from the national Top 100 to the Top 25—and eventually put him in contention for the No. 1 Police Chief honour?
The answer will ultimately depend on the final assessment by Fame India–Asia Post.
But one thing is already clear: Bagate’s Ratnagiri tenure has created a profile built not only around crime control, but around technology, innovation and preventive public safety.
