Guwahati: India produced a stunning batting performance in Guwahati on Wednesday, chasing down a massive target of 406 runs against the West Indies to register an eight-wicket victory in the second ODI. The win gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and added another remarkable chapter to the country’s ODI record book.
The West Indies had put India under enormous pressure after posting 405 for seven in their 50 overs. John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all scored centuries, with Campbell making 101, Hope contributing 104 and Jangoo smashing 114. It was the first time West Indies had scored more than 400 in an ODI and their highest-ever total against India in the format.
🟡 Gill Leads India’s Record-Breaking Reply
India’s response began aggressively, with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill taking the attack to the West Indies bowlers. The opening pair added 255 runs before Rohit was dismissed for a superb 101 off 75 balls. His century was his 35th in ODI cricket and also took him past the 12,000-run mark in the format.
With Rohit back in the dressing room, Gill continued his extraordinary assault. The Indian captain produced one of the most remarkable ODI innings of his career, remaining unbeaten on 223 from just 133 deliveries. His innings included 24 fours and eight sixes and saw him reach his double century in only 117 balls — the fastest double century in ODI history.
Gill’s innings also placed him in an exclusive group of ODI batters. With his second double century, he became only the second player to score more than one ODI double hundred, joining Rohit Sharma in that elite list.
🟡 406 Chased With 39 Balls to Spare
India reached 406 for two in just 43.3 overs, with 39 deliveries still remaining. Ruturaj Gaikwad finished unbeaten on 31 alongside Gill as India completed their highest successful run chase in ODI cricket. The 406-run chase is also only the second successful chase of a target above 400 in men’s ODI history, after South Africa’s famous 438-run chase against Australia in 2006.
The match itself produced an extraordinary batting spectacle. A total of 811 runs were scored, while five centuries were recorded — three by West Indies batters and two by India. The combination of West Indies’ record-breaking first innings and India’s remarkable chase made the Guwahati ODI one of the most statistically significant matches of the series.
🟡 West Indies’ Record Total Overwhelmed by India’s Response
For much of the first innings, West Indies appeared to have established a potentially match-winning total. Campbell’s 101, Hope’s 104 and Jangoo’s 114 gave the visitors a huge platform, while India’s bowlers struggled to contain the scoring rate. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja claimed two wickets each, with Kuldeep also reaching the milestone of 200 ODI wickets during the match.
However, the massive target ultimately proved insufficient against India’s batting charge. Rohit’s century provided the early momentum before Gill transformed the chase into a record-setting performance. India’s ability to maintain an extraordinary scoring rate throughout the innings ensured that the West Indies never managed to regain control of the contest.
With the victory, India have now secured the three-match ODI series 2-0. The third ODI will give the West Indies an opportunity to avoid a series clean sweep, while India will look to complete the series with another strong performance after an extraordinary night of record-breaking cricket in Guwahati
