Satara: Maharashtra has received a major water-security boost as the Koyna reservoir has crossed the 100 TMC storage mark, bringing significant relief ahead of the remaining monsoon season. The milestone is particularly important for the state because Koyna is one of Maharashtra’s most strategically important reservoirs for both water management and hydropower generation.
The achievement comes after a strong monsoon spell steadily increased the reservoir level. Just a day earlier, the storage had reached 99.31 TMC, putting the dam within touching distance of the 100-TMC mark.
🟡 A big relief for Maharashtra
The 100-TMC milestone provides a much-needed cushion for the months ahead. Adequate storage in Koyna is important not only for the Satara region but also for downstream areas dependent on the Krishna river system.
The stored water supports irrigation, agricultural activity and electricity generation, making the reservoir crucial for both farmers and the wider economy. The water availability also offers greater confidence for planning irrigation requirements during the post-monsoon and summer periods.
Guardian Minister Shambhuraj Desai with dam officers performed the traditional water worship at the reservoir after the storage reached a satisfactory level. The occasion reflected the importance attached to Koyna’s water reserves and their role in the region’s future water security.
🟡 Koyna is more than a reservoir
The Koyna project is a major multipurpose water and hydropower project. According to Maharashtra’s dam-rehabilitation documentation, the reservoir has a gross storage capacity of about 100.125 TMC and live storage of about 105.25 TMC, with a reservoir spread of nearly 120 sq km. The project has an installed hydropower capacity of approximately 1,960 MW.
The Koyna hydroelectric system uses water from the reservoir through an extensive underground power-generation network. Government documentation records the project’s major role in Maharashtra’s electricity generation, while the reservoir also contributes to irrigation and water management in the Krishna basin.
🟡 From water shortage concerns to confidence
The significance of the latest development becomes clearer when compared with the situation earlier this year. In June, live storage had fallen to around 10.29 TMC, with gross storage at about 15.41 TMC, prompting restrictions on non-drinking water lifting from released Koyna water.
The subsequent monsoon recovery has dramatically changed the picture. By July 13, storage had reached 53 TMC, while by July 24 it had climbed beyond 65 TMC. The reservoir then continued its rapid rise through August.
Crossing 100 TMC therefore represents a remarkable turnaround and gives Maharashtra a considerably stronger water position going into the later stages of the monsoon.
🟡 Agriculture and power get a boost
For farmers, higher reservoir storage means greater confidence in irrigation planning. For the power sector, adequate water availability supports the operation of the Koyna hydroelectric complex, one of the state’s most important hydropower assets.
The Koyna project has an installed capacity of around 1,960 MW, making reservoir levels closely linked to Maharashtra’s energy-security planning.
With the reservoir now around the 100-TMC mark, attention will turn to maintaining adequate storage while managing inflows and releases carefully during the remainder of the monsoon.

100 TMC at Koyna is not just a number. It is a major water-security milestone for Maharashtra—bringing relief to agriculture, strengthening irrigation planning and providing an important cushion for hydropower generation.
For a state where water availability directly affects farming, electricity and the regional economy, the Koyna reservoir reaching the 100-TMC mark is undoubtedly a major monsoon relief.
