Maharashtra Leads India’s Electric Vehicle Revolution

Mumbai: To encourage EV adoption, the Maharashtra government has withdrawn its proposed 6% tax on electric vehicles priced above ₹30 lakh. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that this tax would not generate significant revenue and could undermine the government’s push for EV adoption.
Emerging as the National Capital of Electric Vehicles
Maharashtra is poised to become the hub of India’s electric vehicle revolution, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announcing that the state is emerging as the “national capital” of electric vehicles. This development is driven by the establishment of major EV manufacturing plants in Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Reducing Air Pollution and Promoting Sustainability
The shift towards electric vehicles is expected to significantly reduce air pollution, with vehicles running on petrol or diesel being the largest contributors to pollution. To support this transition, the government is building a comprehensive EV charging network across the state. Moreover, over 50% of newly registered vehicles in Maharashtra are now electric, with the number of EV registrations steadily rising.
Attracting EV Manufacturers and Driving Economic Growth
Maharashtra’s strategic location and supportive policies have made it an attractive destination for EV manufacturers. Companies like Mahindra and Mahindra, Tata Motors, and Ather Energy have already set up or announced investments in EV manufacturing facilities in the state. The state’s vision for a greener future, coupled with its skilled workforce and well-developed supplier ecosystem, makes it an ideal location for EV manufacturing.
