Mumbai: Local citizens, led by Babubhai Bhawanji, former Deputy Mayor of Mumbai, have submitted a heartfelt appeal to the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai’s Health Department. They seek to establish designated pigeon feeding zones and shelters across the city, ensuring the well-being of these birds.
The plea comes after the recent suspension of feeding activities at pigeon shelters (Kabutar khanas) by the Municipal Corporation, following the Honourable High Court’s directive. The citizens propose constructing organized pigeon shelters along Mumbai’s coastline and other areas, allowing temporary feeding at existing shelters, and permitting bird lovers to feed pigeons in specific locations.
This initiative highlights the importance of compassion and cultural heritage in Indian tradition, emphasizing the moral and spiritual responsibility to protect all living beings.
Key Suggestions
Construct pigeon shelters along Mumbai’s coastline.
Establish shelters at Racecourse grounds, Eastern Express Highway, and other areas.
Allow temporary feeding at existing shelters.
Permit feeding in designated areas like Racecourse grounds and temples.
Preserve and maintain the Dadar Kabutarkhana, a British-era heritage site.
The citizens urge the authorities to consider their appeal with seriousness and compassion, taking necessary action to protect Mumbai’s pigeon population.
