Raj Thackeray Sparks Controversy Over Holy Kumbh Bath

Pune: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray has created a controversy by mocking the holy bath at the Kumbh Mela, comparing it to superstition. This statement has hurt the sentiments of many, and critics are questioning whether Thackeray will take another U-turn from Hindutva.

Critique of BJP and EVMs

Raj Thackeray sparked controversy by commenting on the alleged collusion between the BJP and Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at a party event on January 31, 2025. He expressed doubts over the EVM results in Maharashtra and the country, also questioning the elected MLAs of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Party.

Shift in MNS Ideology

Raj Thackeray initially adopted a four-color flag, symbolizing inclusivity of all castes, when he launched the MNS on March 9, 2006. However, on January 23, 2020, Thackeray unveiled a saffron flag, marking a significant shift towards hardline Hindutva in Maharashtra.

MNS’s Electoral Setbacks

The MNS faced significant challenges in the last Maharashtra Assembly elections, with disputes over seat sharing and a lack of positive response from other parties. Despite predictions from analysts that the MNS would win three to four seats in Mumbai, the party’s candidates lost their deposits in several areas. The party secured only 1.6% of the vote, putting its recognition from the Election Commission under threat.

Impact on Maharashtra Politics

The Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress alliance defeated the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shivsena and congress in the Maharashtra assembly elections. However, the MNS’s presence benefited the Shiv Sena Uddhav Thackeray faction, which secured ten seats, while the BJP-Mahayuti alliance suffered a significant setback.

Future Prospects

After the recently concluded assembly elections, all party eyes are on the upcoming municipal and local body elections in Maharashtra. The MNS has already begun preparations, and speculation is rife about Raj Thackeray’s next move. Analysts are watching closely to see if Raj Thackeray will introduce new issues or make organizational changes as he shifts focus to village-level politics.
