Rising Political Tension Before Counting

A sharp political confrontation has surfaced in West Bengal just ahead of vote counting for the 2026 Assembly elections, with serious questions being raised over the safety of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The dispute is mainly between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), both accusing each other and expressing concerns about EVM security in strongrooms. On the ground, the atmosphere has turned tense, with party workers actively keeping watch outside storage centres.

Mamata Banerjee Flags Security Concerns

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised strong doubts over the safety of EVMs, alleging possible manipulation attempts. Reports indicate that she personally inspected a strongroom late at night and urged party members to stay alert. The situation intensified further after claims that CCTV monitoring systems at certain locations briefly stopped functioning, which added to suspicion and triggered political reactions.

BJP Hits Back With Counter Claims

Responding to the allegations, the BJP has dismissed all charges and instead blamed TMC for creating unnecessary panic. Party leaders have alleged that individuals linked to the ruling party tried to approach restricted areas near strongrooms. This has led to direct confrontations at multiple sites, where workers from both sides are present, creating a highly charged environment ahead of counting day.

Earlier Complaints Add Fuel to the Row

The controversy has been further amplified by earlier developments during polling, where complaints related to EVM irregularities led to repolling in certain booths. These past incidents have strengthened the narrative of suspicion and have become a major talking point in the current political clash, increasing pressure on authorities to ensure complete transparency.

Election Commission Assures Full Security

Amid the escalating political war of words, the Election Commission of India has categorically rejected all tampering allegations. Officials have stated that EVMs are protected through strict multi-layer security protocols and continuous monitoring. Additional observers have been deployed, and access to counting centres is being tightly regulated to maintain fairness and credibility in the counting process.

High-Stakes Situation Ahead of Results

As counting day approaches, West Bengal remains on edge with heightened political sensitivity. The ongoing EVM dispute reflects not just procedural concerns but also the intense battle for narrative control before the final results. With both major parties standing firm on their positions, the situation remains crucial and closely watched across the state.
