New Delhi : The Vice Presidential election held today culminated in a clear victory for National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate CP Radhakrishnan, who will now serve as the 15th Vice President of India. The results, declared by the Election Commission of India, confirmed that Radhakrishnan secured a strong majority with the backing of NDA parliamentarians, comfortably surpassing the required mark.
The polling took place in the Parliament House, where Members of Parliament from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha exercised their franchise through a secret ballot system. Officials reported a smooth, transparent, and peaceful election process, with all constitutional procedures being strictly followed.
With this win, Radhakrishnan will also assume the crucial responsibility of Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, a role that places him at the center of parliamentary proceedings and debates. His election comes at a time when consensus-building and effective management of the Upper House are considered vital to the nation’s legislative process.
Political leaders across party lines extended their greetings and congratulations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Radhakrishnan’s long political journey and organizational experience within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), calling him a leader committed to democratic values. Opposition leaders also acknowledged the importance of the Vice President’s constitutional role, emphasizing expectations of impartiality in conducting Rajya Sabha sessions.
Born in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan has been active in politics for several decades. He has served as a two-time Member of Parliament, BJP state president, and has held key organizational roles. Known for his simple lifestyle and grassroots connect, he is also regarded as a leader who played an important role in strengthening the BJP’s presence in southern India.
The Vice President is the second-highest constitutional authority in India after the President. Along with presiding over the Rajya Sabha, the office also plays a significant role in ensuring the smooth functioning of India’s parliamentary democracy.
The swearing-in ceremony for CP Radhakrishnan is expected to take place in the coming days, where President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office.
