Congress claims massive public support at Ramlila Maidan, while BJP dismisses the gathering as a flop show. Conflicting statements from both parties turn the rally into a fresh political battle.

New Delhi : The Congress rally held at Delhi’s historic Ramlila Maidan on November 1 has triggered a fresh political confrontation between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While Congress leaders are describing the gathering as a major success and a demonstration of public support, the BJP has dismissed it as a flop show, questioning the actual turnout.

Organised under the banner of ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’, the rally focused on allegations of electoral irregularities, transparency in the electoral process and concerns surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Congress also raised questions about the role of the Election Commission. However, following the rally, the political debate shifted towards one central question: Was the gathering really a success, or did Congress fail to attract the expected crowd?

🟡 Congress Claims Public Support and Opposition Unity

Congress leaders have strongly rejected the BJP’s criticism, maintaining that the rally witnessed participation from supporters and party workers representing different parts of the country. Congress general secretary and MP Kumari Selja said the participation reflected growing public dissatisfaction with the policies of the BJP-led government. She also thanked supporters who travelled from Haryana, Uttarakhand and other states to attend the gathering.

Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal described the rally as the ‘beginning of the end’ for the BJP-led government. Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain also defended the gathering, saying the participation reflected a broader movement to protect democratic institutions and voting rights.

Congress leader Pawan Khera launched a counterattack against the BJP, alleging that its leaders remained preoccupied with Congress and Rahul Gandhi. The party maintained that the rally was an important step towards building a nationwide movement against alleged electoral irregularities.

🟡 BJP Counterattack: 40 Per Cent of the Ground Empty?

The BJP presented an entirely different picture of the gathering. BJP MP and national spokesperson Sambit Patra described the rally as a ‘super flop show’. He claimed that nearly 40 per cent of Ramlila Maidan remained empty, questioning Congress’s earlier target of bringing around 10 lakh people to the event.

Patra also referred to the number of chairs arranged at the venue, claiming that thousands remained unoccupied during the afternoon. These figures, however, represent the BJP’s political assessment and have not been independently established as the official attendance count.

Targeting Rahul Gandhi, Patra argued that allegations concerning electoral irregularities should be pursued through legal channels rather than political speeches. He challenged Congress to present its allegations before the appropriate judicial authorities.

🟡 Rahul Gandhi Raises Questions Over Electoral Process

During the rally, Rahul Gandhi strongly raised the issue of alleged electoral manipulation and questioned the functioning of the Election Commission. He also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the concerns raised by the Opposition regarding electoral transparency.

Congress maintained that questions surrounding voting rights and electoral integrity were not merely political issues but matters directly connected with the functioning of democratic institutions.

🟡 Crowd Strength Versus Political Message: What Does the Rally Indicate?

The rally brought several prominent opposition leaders onto one platform, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti. Their participation gave the gathering a wider INDIA bloc dimension beyond Congress’s organisational strength.

For Congress, the rally represents an attempt to unite opposition parties around electoral transparency, democratic institutions and voting rights. For the BJP, the turnout controversy has become an opportunity to question Congress’s organisational strength and the credibility of its claims.

The bigger political question is whether Congress can convert the rally into a sustained nationwide movement. The success of the campaign will depend not simply on the number of people attending one gathering, but also on whether the Opposition can maintain unity, take its allegations to the appropriate institutions and sustain public attention.

For now, Congress is projecting the rally as a demonstration of public support, while the BJP is calling it a political failure. With no independently verified attendance figure establishing the actual turnout, the competing claims remain part of the ongoing political battle.
