Unseasonal Weather Raises Concerns as Residents Experience Summer-Like Conditions; Early Monsoon Withdrawal and Reduced Rainfall Among Key Factors

🔴 By | Arvind Jadhav

Pune : October is traditionally associated with a gradual transition towards cooler weather in Pune. However, the city has experienced an unusually hot spell this year, with temperatures remaining significantly above normal and residents continuing to face intense daytime heat. According to the latest reported weather data, Pune’s Shivajinagar observatory recorded maximum temperatures above 35°C on 14 days during October, marking the highest such frequency in at least 12 years.

The unusual pattern has attracted attention from weather experts, particularly because temperatures above 35°C have generally been uncommon in October over the past decade. In comparison, October 2025 recorded a maximum temperature of just 33.2°C at Shivajinagar. The latest figures highlight how significantly daytime weather conditions have changed this year.

🟡 Why Is Pune Experiencing Unusual October Heat?

According to weather experts, the early withdrawal of the southwest monsoon is one of the major reasons behind the rising temperatures. The reduced cloud cover and fewer thunderstorms towards the end of the monsoon season have allowed stronger sunshine to reach the ground, resulting in higher daytime temperatures.

Another important factor is the early weakening of moisture-bearing westerly winds, which generally help moderate temperatures across Mumbai, Pune, the Konkan region and neighbouring areas. These winds were replaced by relatively dry easterly winds, contributing to the unusual rise in temperatures.

🟡 Temperatures Remain Above Normal Across Pune

Weather observations on October 26 showed that Shivajinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 34.2°C, which was 2.7°C above normal. Lohegaon recorded 34.6°C, around 3.1°C above normal. Pashan and Wadgaonsheri also experienced temperatures above 34°C, while Chinchwad and Hadapsar crossed 33°C.

Interestingly, the city has also witnessed some exceptionally hot days this month. On October 10, Shivajinagar recorded 35.9°C, the highest October temperature at the station since 2002. The reading was approximately 4°C above normal, underlining the intensity of the unusual October heat.

🟡 Will Pune Get Any Relief?

While daytime temperatures have remained elevated, minimum temperatures have started returning to normal levels. On October 26, Shivajinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 17.4°C, while Lohegaon recorded 17.7°C, providing relatively cooler conditions during the night and early morning.

Weather experts have indicated that Cyclone Arnab is unlikely to have a direct impact on Pune, although changing wind patterns may bring a slight reduction in morning temperatures. The city is expected to experience largely clear skies, while isolated thunderstorms, lightning, rain and gusty winds remain possible in the Pune Ghats, according to the earlier IMD warning.

The unusual October heat has once again brought attention to changing weather patterns and the importance of monitoring local temperature trends. Residents, particularly senior citizens, children and people working outdoors, should take precautions against prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak afternoon heat.
