ECI’s Historic Move: Linking Voter ID with Aadhaar to Revolutionize Electoral Process
By: PR Network
New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken a monumental step towards electoral reform by deciding to link Voter ID with Aadhaar. This move aims to tackle long-standing issues like duplicate voter IDs and fraudulent voting, ensuring the integrity and authenticity of the electoral process.
The Rationale Behind the Move
The ECI’s decision is grounded in Article 326 of the Indian Constitution, which grants voting rights exclusively to Indian citizens. By linking Aadhaar cards to Voter IDs, the ECI seeks to establish authenticity and reduce fraudulent voting.
Benefits of Linking Voter ID with Aadhaar
This initiative is expected to bring numerous benefits, including:
Reducing Duplicate Voter IDs – Eliminating duplicate IDs will ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
Preventing Fraudulent Voting – Linking Aadhaar cards to Voter IDs will prevent fraudulent voting and strengthen the electoral system.
Streamlining the Electoral Process – This move will also simplify the electoral process, making it more efficient and effective.
What’s Next ?
The ECI will proceed with technical consultations between the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and its experts. These consultations will pave the way for the implementation of this initiative, ensuring that the linking process is carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and relevant Supreme Court judgments.
As of now, over 60% of India’s 94.5 crore voters have linked their Aadhaar number to their voter IDs, with Tripura having the highest rate of Aadhaar linking.
