Mumbai: In a significant development, the travel time between Uran and the Gateway of India is set to be reduced by half with the introduction of electric ferries. According to reports, the service is expected to commence within two weeks, following the completion of ongoing speed trials. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (J.N.P.A.) has approved a Rs 37.8 crore lease for two electric ferries, which will operate over a 10 year period.
Faster and More Comfortable Commute
The new electric ferries will significantly reduce travel time, benefiting local residents, JNPA personnel, and officials from customs, the air force, CISF, and ports who frequently use this route. Each ferry will accommodate 20-24 passengers, with tickets available for purchase online. The frequency and schedule of the ferries will be determined based on demand.
Enhanced Passenger Experience and Sustainability
The electric ferries will not only reduce travel time but also provide a more comfortable and sustainable commuting experience. The ferries will feature air-conditioned seating, improving the overall travel experience. This initiative is part of the Harit Sagar, or ‘Green Port,’ initiative, which aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2047 and increase renewable energy usage across major ports by 60 per cent.
