Kerala CM Decision Delay: Congress Struggles to Finalise Leader After Big Win

By | PR Desk

Even after securing a strong mandate in the Kerala Assembly elections, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is yet to announce its Chief Minister, creating an unusual political situation in the state. The delay has sparked intense discussions within party circles and raised concerns among alliance partners and voters who are wating clarity on leadership.

The Congress leadership has shifted the decision-making process to New Delhi, where senior leaders are holding continuous meetings to arrive at a consensus. The party is carefully evaluating internal equations, MLA support, and alliance dynamics before making the final announcement. This cautious approach indicates that the leadership wants to avoid any internal conflict after forming the government.

Close Contest Between Top Leaders

The Chief Minister race has mainly narrowed down to two prominent leaders — V D Satheesan and K C Venugopal. Both leaders command strong support within the party, but from different factions. Satheesan is being seen as a leader with strong grassroots connect and public backing, while Venugopal is considered a trusted face within the central leadership.

Senior leader Ramesh Chennithala has also emerged as a possible consensus candidate, especially if the high command decides to avoid factional rivalry. However, the internal competition has made the situation complex, with no clear frontrunner emerging so far.

High Command Takes Full Control

The Congress Legislature Party has already authorised the party’s central leadership to take the final call on the Chief Minister. This means that the decision will not be made in Kerala but directly by the high command, following consultations with key leaders and MLAs.

At the same time, the leadership has reportedly advised party members to avoid public statements or pressure tactics. Despite this, subtle lobbying and support campaigns have been visible across the state, reflecting the high stakes involved in the decision.

Allies Express Concern

The delay in announcing the Chief Minister has started affecting the mood within the alliance. Key UDF partners have informally expressed their चिंता over the prolonged uncertainty, stating that a quick decision would help in smooth government formation and governance.

Political observers believe that any further delay could send a wrong signal to the public, especially after a decisive electoral victory. The expectation among voters is that the new government should take charge without unnecessary complications.

Decision Likely Soon

Sources within the party suggest that the Congress high command is in the final stage of consultations and a decision is expected soon. Once the Chief Minister is announced, the swearing-in ceremony and cabinet formation are likely to follow immediately.

The Kerala CM decision has turned into a crucial test for Congress leadership. While the party has successfully secured electoral victory, the real challenge now lies in managing internal balance and presenting a united front. The final choice of Chief Minister will play a key role in determining the stability and performance of the upcoming government.
