Mumbai – In a deeply disturbing incident from Mumbai, four members of the same family lost their lives within hours of reportedly consuming watermelon, triggering a major investigation into possible food poisoning or contamination.

The incident took place in South Mumbai, where the family had spent the evening together and shared dinner with relatives. According to preliminary information, all members appeared normal until late at night when a few of them consumed watermelon kept at home. Within a short span of time, they began experiencing severe health complications.

Family members reportedly developed symptoms such as intense vomiting, diarrhoea, and sudden weakness during the early hours of the night. Their condition deteriorated rapidly, forcing relatives and neighbours to rush them to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, all four were declared dead, leaving the local community in shock.

What has raised serious concern is that others who attended the same dinner did not fall ill. This has shifted the focus of the investigation toward the watermelon consumed later, making it a key piece of evidence in the case.

Police have initiated an inquiry and registered a case to determine the exact cause of death. Food samples, including the suspected fruit, have been collected for laboratory testing. Authorities are also examining whether the fruit may have been contaminated due to chemical exposure, improper storage, or external adulteration.

Health experts note that such incidents are extremely rare but caution that improperly handled or contaminated food can become dangerous, especially during peak summer when perishable items spoil quickly.

The tragic deaths have sparked concern among residents, with many calling for stricter monitoring of food quality and hygiene standards across local markets. Officials have assured that a detailed report will be released once forensic and medical findings are complete.
