Mumbai: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking to cancel the recognition of Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) due to alleged provocative statements made against migrants. The petition, filed by Sunil Shukla, national president of Uttar Bharatiya Vikas Sena, claims Thackeray’s statements have incited tensions against North Indians in Maharashtra.
Background of the Controversy
The controversy began when Thackeray announced a campaign to promote the use of Marathi language in banks and establishments during the Gudi Padwa meeting. However, his comments have been criticized for being divisive and inflammatory.
Previous Controversies Surrounding Raj Thackeray
Raj Thackeray’s past actions have sparked intense debate and violence. He led a violent movement against North Indian migrants in 2008, resulting in clashes and property damage. Thackeray also faced criticism for alleged hate speeches against people from Bihar, leading to a non-bailable warrant in 2013. Additionally, he threatened to ban films affiliated with Jaya Bachchan and disrupted screenings of Wake Up Sid due to its reference to “Bombay” instead of “Mumbai”. These incidents highlight his emphasis on promoting Marathi culture and identity.
Demand for Action
The petition demands that the Election Commission cancel MNS’s recognition and prevent Thackeray from making further provocative statements. The MNS chief’s future actions and the party’s recognition now hang in the balance.
