New Delhi: In a grand ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on April 28, 2025, President Droupadi Murmu bestowed the esteemed Padma Shri award upon Chaitram Pawar, a dedicated resident of Baripada village in Maharashtra’s Dhule district. This honor recognizes Pawar’s exceptional contributions to environmental conservation and tribal community development.
Transforming Barren Landscapes
Pawar’s remarkable journey began in the 1990s when Baripada faced severe environmental challenges. Through his leadership, the village underwent a profound transformation. The Joint Forest Management program, initiated in 1992, led to the planting of over 5,000 trees and conservation of approximately 1,100 hectares of forest land. This effort also protected 8 rare animal species, 48 bird species, and 435 plant species.
Sustainable Development Initiatives
Pawar’s initiatives extended beyond afforestation. His focus on water conservation included constructing 445 small dams, 40 large dams, and 5 kilometers of contour trenches, significantly improving the water table and agricultural productivity. The People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) documented the village’s traditional knowledge and natural resources, creating a model for sustainable development.
Global Recognition
Baripada’s transformation under Pawar’s leadership earned international recognition. The village was ranked second in a global survey, and his project received accolades from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Pawar was also honored with the prestigious Vanbhushan award by the Maharashtra government.
A Symbol of Dedication
The Padma Shri award is a testament to Pawar’s tireless efforts and dedication. This recognition brings pride not only to Pawar but also to the Baripada village and the tribal community.
Inspiring a Better Future
Pawar’s work demonstrates the impact of community collaboration and environmental conservation. His story serves as a beacon of inspiration, showcasing the potential for small steps to lead to significant positive change and sustainable development.
