New Delhi: A petition filed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and 10 other INDIA bloc leaders challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has reportedly been flagged for 14 procedural defects by the Supreme Court Registry. The objections reportedly include missing legal documents, unclear copies of supporting records and a shortfall of ₹220 in court fees.
🟡 Missing Authorisations and Document-Related Objections
The Registry has reportedly raised objections over the absence of vakalatnamas, or authorisation documents appointing lawyers, for some co-petitioners. It has also sought a clear and legible copy of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s identity document. The readability and presentation of certain supporting documents have also come under scrutiny.
🟡 INDIA Bloc Challenges Electoral Roll Revision
The petition challenges the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Opposition leaders have expressed concerns about the deletion of voters’ names and changes to electoral lists. Their demands reportedly include an independent review of deletions, greater transparency in the revision process and safeguards to ensure that eligible voters are not removed without following due procedure.
🟡 Registry Objections Do Not Mean Rejection
The identification of procedural defects does not mean that the Supreme Court has rejected the petition or ruled against the allegations raised by the petitioners. The Registry’s objections relate to the filing and documentation requirements that must be addressed for the case to proceed through the judicial process.
The next stage will depend on the petitioners’ response to the objections and the subsequent progress of the case. The Supreme Court’s position on the substantive demands will become clear only through further judicial proceedings and orders.
