🟡 BJP turns Vande Mataram into a nationwide political campaign

The political battle between the BJP and Congress has entered a fresh phase, with Vande Mataram now emerging as the latest major flashpoint between the two parties.

The BJP on Saturday adopted a resolution strongly opposing the Congress Working Committee’s decision to continue singing only the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram at Congress programmes. The resolution was adopted during the first meeting of BJP president Nitin Nabin’s newly appointed national office-bearers in New Delhi.

🟡 BJP says there will be ‘no compromise’

The BJP resolution stated that the party would not accept any compromise on the honour, dignity and historical legacy of Vande Mataram for political convenience or appeasement.

BJP president Nitin Nabin said the party would oppose attempts to place the National Song under what the BJP described as communal pressure, political appeasement or narrow vote-bank considerations.

The BJP has also positioned the issue beyond a routine party dispute, arguing that Vande Mataram represents an important part of India’s national consciousness and the history of the freedom movement.

🟡 Why did Congress choose only two stanzas?

The controversy escalated after the Congress Working Committee reaffirmed its 1937 resolution, under which only the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram are to be sung at Congress events.

The Congress has defended its position by pointing to the historical circumstances surrounding the 1937 decision. The debate over the later stanzas has existed for decades because they contain references that some Muslim leaders and organisations had objected to on religious grounds.

The BJP, however, argues that a historical political decision cannot be treated as overriding later constitutional and parliamentary developments. Its latest resolution specifically attacks the idea that the 1937 position should determine the status of Vande Mataram today.

🟡 BJP announces nationwide campaign

The BJP has now decided to take the controversy beyond political statements.

The party announced a nationwide campaign to spread the history, meaning, national significance and legacy of Vande Mataram across the country.

The campaign will also focus particularly on younger generations, with the BJP saying that the complete song and its historical connection with India’s freedom struggle should not be forgotten. The party also plans to highlight Mahatma Gandhi’s views on Vande Mataram as part of the campaign.

🟡 Congress-BJP ideological battle widens

The latest development adds another layer to the increasingly sharp political confrontation between the BJP and Congress.

For Congress, the two-stanza position is linked to a historical decision taken by its leadership in 1937. For the BJP, the issue has become one of national honour, historical legacy and the treatment of a national symbol.

The dispute therefore goes beyond the question of how many stanzas should be sung. It has opened a much larger political debate over history, nationalism, religious sensitivities and the legacy of India’s freedom movement.

🟡 The political message is getting louder

With the BJP now preparing a nationwide campaign, the Vande Mataram controversy is unlikely to remain confined to party headquarters or Parliament.

The BJP has made its position clear: the complete legacy of Vande Mataram must be protected and cannot be compromised for political considerations.

Congress, meanwhile, continues to stand by its historical 1937 position.

What began as a disagreement over the singing of a national song has now become another major ideological battlefield between India’s two principal political forces.
