New Delhi: A political confrontation outside a Delhi police station turned into a major flashpoint on Friday after Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi staged a prolonged dharna demanding registration of an FIR over alleged pellet gun injuries suffered by a young student during a protest.
Rahul Gandhi remained outside the Parliament Street Police Station for several hours, insisting that the complaint of 19-year-old student Sahil Lochab be formally registered. The protest drew senior Congress leaders and party workers to the spot, turning the police station into the centre of a fresh political confrontation between the Opposition and the Delhi Police.
🟡 FIR REGISTERED AFTER HOURS-LONG PROTEST
The standoff eventually ended after Delhi Police registered an FIR against unidentified persons in connection with the alleged pellet injuries.
Following the registration of the FIR, Rahul Gandhi ended his dharna and described the development as an important step towards justice. The Congress leadership welcomed the police action, arguing that the sustained pressure from Rahul Gandhi had forced the authorities to formally take up the complaint.
The case will now move into the investigation stage, with police expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged firing, the injuries suffered by the student and the events that unfolded during the protest.
🟡 WHAT IS THE PELLET GUN CONTROVERSY?
The controversy centres on Sahil Lochab, a 19-year-old student who allegedly suffered injuries from pellets during a protest in Delhi on July 20.
Lochab approached the police seeking registration of a case over the incident. The allegation has triggered questions about the use of force during student protests and whether the action taken by security personnel was justified.
Rahul Gandhi took up the issue after meeting the student and his family. He subsequently went to the Parliament Street Police Station and demanded that the complaint be converted into a formal FIR.
🟡 RAHUL GANDHI REFUSES TO LEAVE
The Opposition leader’s decision to sit outside the police station dramatically escalated the situation.
Rahul Gandhi made it clear that he would remain at the spot until the FIR was registered. His presence attracted Congress leaders, MPs and supporters, while security personnel were deployed around the area to prevent the situation from escalating.
The dharna continued for more than six hours, turning what began as a demand for police action into a larger political confrontation.
The message from the Congress was clear: the alleged injuries suffered by a young protester could not simply be ignored.
🟡 CONGRESS HAILS THE DEVELOPMENT
Congress leaders welcomed the FIR registration and described it as a victory for the student’s demand for justice.
The party maintained that Rahul Gandhi’s intervention had ensured that the complaint received official attention. Congress leaders also criticised the authorities for the delay in registering the case and questioned the circumstances in which the alleged pellet injuries occurred.
For the Opposition, the incident has become another issue through which it is seeking to question the government’s handling of protests and the use of force against demonstrators.
🟡 BJP HITS BACK
The BJP, however, strongly criticised Rahul Gandhi’s dharna.
BJP leaders accused the Congress leader of turning a police matter into a political spectacle and described the protest as an attempt to create confrontation with law-enforcement agencies.
The BJP’s counterattack indicates that the FIR may not bring an end to the political controversy. Instead, the issue could become another flashpoint between the government and the Opposition.
🟡 NOW, THE INVESTIGATION MATTERS
With the FIR finally registered, attention will now shift from the political protest to the actual investigation.
Police will have to establish what happened during the July 20 protest, who allegedly used the pellet gun, under what circumstances the firing took place and whether the force used was lawful.
The medical evidence concerning Sahil Lochab’s injuries, eyewitness accounts and available video footage could also become important in determining what happened.
For Rahul Gandhi, the dharna ended with the registration of the FIR. But for Delhi Police, the real challenge has now begun: establishing the facts behind the alleged pellet firing.
🟡 A NEW POLITICAL FLASHPOINT
The episode has once again highlighted the widening confrontation between the Opposition and the authorities over protest rights, policing and the use of force.
What began with one student’s complaint has now turned into a national political issue, with Rahul Gandhi personally intervening and the Congress putting the full weight of the Opposition behind the demand.
The FIR may have ended the dharna—but it is unlikely to end the controversy.
