BJP Minister Nitesh Rane Sentenced to 1 Month Jail in 2019 Case

By | Arvind Jadhav

Mumbai – Maharashtra minister and leader of Bharatiya Janata Party, Nitesh Rane, has been sentenced to one month in jail by a Sindhudurg court in connection with a 2019 incident involving the alleged humiliation of a government official during a protest over the Mumbai–Goa highway condition.

The case stems from a protest where Rane and his supporters had raised strong objections to the poor state of the highway. During the agitation, a government engineer was allegedly subjected to public humiliation, with mud being poured over him, an act that had sparked outrage and led to legal proceedings. After years of trial, the court found Rane guilty of obstructing and insulting a public servant while on duty, sending a clear message that even elected representatives are bound by the law.

While pronouncing the verdict, the court observed that public figures must exercise restraint and responsibility, warning that such acts can undermine administrative authority and public trust. However, Rane received immediate relief as the court suspended the sentence temporarily, giving him the opportunity to approach a higher court. Several other accused in the case were acquitted due to lack of sufficient evidence.

The verdict has triggered a sharp political reaction across the state. Leaders from the opposition, including Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar, indirectly criticised the ruling party, stating that the judgment reflects a growing pattern of “misuse of power and intimidation politics.” They argued that such incidents damage the image of governance and called for higher standards of accountability from those in office.

On the other hand, BJP leaders have come out in strong defence of Rane. Party supporters maintain that the protest was carried out in the interest of the public and highlight that the issue of poor infrastructure had genuinely affected thousands of commuters. Close aides of Rane have indicated that he will challenge the verdict legally and expressed confidence that he will get relief in higher courts.

The development has reignited debate in Maharashtra politics over the limits of protest by elected representatives and the line between activism and misconduct. Legal experts believe the case could set an important precedent regarding how courts interpret actions taken during political agitations.

As the matter is expected to move to appellate courts, the case continues to remain in focus, both legally and politically, with its impact likely to be felt in the state’s evolving political landscape.
